BROKEN LETTER - contemporary art from Arab countries
In Western countries, contemporary art from Arab countries is almost unknown
and often regarded as a hoard of calligraphy and ornament. Being the first
comprehensive exhibition outside of Arab institutions, "BROKEN LETTER"
presents the most important positions of an extremely dynamic Arab
modernism. The majority of exhibits - dating from a period between 1960 and
now - were created by artists from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran. The title of
the exhibition announces a programme: "Broken Letter" shows a diversified
cultural landscape that has developed beyond calligraphic patterns - though
it often and indirectly refers to the traditional art of handwriting by both
adopting and undermining it in a playful way. "BROKEN LETTER" thus shows art
that faces its own history and successfully breaks with clichés of national
"identities".
